The Body Finder

Jeff Carpenter was famous for discovering the dead bodies of lost hikers, murder victims, or suicides.  He found them when he was jogging or riding his mountain bike.  He was often on TV news reports.

It was a sixth sense, some people said.  But Jeff credited his sharp sense of smell and his peripheral vision.  “There are lots of dead bodies out there, if you take the time to notice them,” he said.

He also attributed his success to his faith.  Every morning, before setting out, he prayed, “Lord, don’t let someone be murdered, but if he is, let me find the body.”

But then he became depressed.  He hadn’t found a dead body in over a month.  Even worse, other joggers and even some mountain climbers were finding dead bodies.  Three kids playing hide-and-seek found a skeleton.

Then he remembered something his grandmother had told him: “Sometimes what you seek is right nearby.”  He looked in his basement, and there was the body of his plumber.
